International StartUp Café, an amazing platform!

I had a great time at International House North Denmark making a presentation at the new International StartUp Café about how I starting my company the Deer&me (design company) and giving tips to the newly started entrepreneurs. We talked about the practical process of starting a company but also the psychological challenge that you have to over come. How to be constant in your job, being organised and keep looking for clients.
This place is a great initiative and I hope it will inspire and be used by the fresh entrepreneurs.

Futuristic design project

Have a look at this amazing article about the project of the billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk. A new way to travel in the future from Los Angles to San Francisco as a human projectile in just 30 minutes.

“Musk, who co-founded PayPal, SpaceX, and Tesla, is miffed at how much the proposed railway would cost per mile and how slowly its trains would travel in comparison to other mass transit systems worldwide. Silicon Valley, which he says is “doing incredible things like indexing all the world’s knowledge and putting rovers on Mars,” should be investing in a better alternative. He laid out his Hyperloop “tubes” proposal today to challenge the status quo, and it’s not out of the question if it could really be built within the cost Musk has projected.

The Hyperloop system that Musk has suggested would cost between US$6 -$10 billion to build and provide passengers with a group-based supersonic form of travel at rates of about $20 per trip. It would work by launching people pods through a vacuum-like tunnel (just think of the old pneumatic tubes for mail).

The idea does have a basis in engineering reality. ET3 and RAND Corporation have already outlined some ideas for so-called vacuum trains between cities, Musk noted. A company called Scramjet has likewise proposed a system that would make travel from coast to coast happen inunder and hour by traveling at speeds of up to 4000 mph. There’s practical benefits too beyond the obvious time savings for travelers.

Musk stated that the Hyperloop system could be more resilient against weather and natural disasters such as California earthquakes. I have encountered major delays on the New Jersey Transit system between Trenton and New York  due to rain. That wouldn’t happen with Hyperloop. Musk also believes that the Hyperloop can be built while being less disruptive to landowners than laying down new railroad tracks.

Your chariot awaits

Your chariot awaits

In contrast, the California High-Speed Rail project has already been allocated a combined budget of over $7 billion by the state and U.S. federal government. The total cost of the system will be in the tens of billions. Passengers would pay more than under the Hyperloop plan (prices may rangebetween $50-100 each way) and travel at around 200 mph. The journey between LA and San Francisco would be around 3 hours by rail, which still has a lot of merit given how long the freeways take.

Musk views tube travel as a new category of transit that should be taken just as seriously as planes, trains and automobiles. It’s also much safer and more efficient, he says.”

“The Hyperloop (or something similar) is, in my opinion, the right solution for the specific case of high traffic city pairs that are less than about 1500 km or 900 miles apart. Around that inflection point, I suspect that supersonic air travel ends up being faster and cheaper. With a high enough altitude and the right geometry, the sonic boom noise on the ground would be no louder than current airliners, so that isn’t a showstopper. Also, a quiet supersonic plane immediately solves every long distance city pair without the need for a vast new worldwide infrastructure,” Musk wrote.

Workshop: Service apps for attraction park

By | Featured | No Comments

This is an example of a project where the designers are needed for analyzing the “scenario of the user” .

The workshop aims to provide an introduction to service apps and developing methods for the tourism industry in Northern Jutland. This workshop have been organized by Claus Østergaard, Ph.D-student at Aalborg University.

We have been working on the senario of the user. We analyzed positive and negative emotion’s peaks during a day at the amusement park.

“The workshop is part of my research focusing on designing and analyzing mobile user experiences such as smartphone applications for theme parks and zoos. The Service Design Network Workshop was part of my research, as I used it to test a framework for designing mobile user experiences. For more information about the workshop please visit “

Global Sustainability JAM Aalborg/ Workshop

Sustainable Seasonal Eating

Here are the pictures of the “Global Sustainability JAM” workshop . You can see how we have develope this project during one week-end.

Description of the project: (video of the presentation coming soon!)

Making people use local produced products and in the same time develop their own Urban Gardens.

It can be hard to have an overview of how much resources is used on the food you buy.

There are increased green house gas emissions due to shipping of food over long distances.

Getting an overview of what to buy when going to the grocery and what to cook can be hard and also figure out what to have for dinner and have a variety of dinners.

“ROOTZ” will give you a way to incorporate sustainability into your daily shopping through meal planning with a focus on local and seasonal products. Local production of vegetables following the season consumes fewer resources than producing food out of season.

Fresh vegetables in season make the food more tasty and healthy and online video will guide you through the cooking process.

The objective of Roots is to help creating more sustainable eating habits and reduce food waste, through inspirational recipes and integrated delivery solutions.

We have been choosing one concept from the brainstorming and work on set the user.

We have been using LEGO for the senario of the user.

Interesting materials

Here are some interesting material that I found when I went to DDC Copenhagen.

This conductive textile is made from knitting very thin metal wires to form a three-layered knitted that creates switch and resistive yarns for pressure sensors.

It was introduced into interection design fields but mostly limited to display and exhibitions

Made from an agglomerate of rubber foam and polyurethane glue with materials derived from industrial off-cuts and other selected derived from materials, Eco-C1 has excellent sound absorption sound proofing and thermal insulation features. It is resistant to parasites, weather and ozone.

It may look and feel like any other soft fabric but this textile is actually made using ceramic yarn that provide heat resistance to keep the wearer cool whilst also offering protection from harmful UV rays.

Ceramics is well-known for its incradible resistance to heat and has the ability to withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees Celsius.

These fabrics, including the Circulation Rug, represent some of the most interesting, playful and innovative textiles available today.
